"Mon éducation (Tribute to Buzz)" found its origin in a conversation with linguist Patrick Morency, to whom I am most grateful. It is intended to pay tribute to astronaut Buzz Aldrin, crew member of the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, and second man to set foot upon the moon, right after Neil Armstrong. This body of work does not deal with the "giant leap for mankind," but rather with the little step that followed, as well as the impossible way back: marked by fame, idleness, alcoholism and despair. Back in 2007, the installation sought to stage various codes of abstraction in a dialectical manner, in order to reflect on the feeling of loss regarding our sense of history.
The installation includes:
– two series of drawings on heat sensitive paper: the series "before," consisting of 30 drawings entitled "Geo-rockets"; and the series "after," consisting of 45 heat drawings entitled "Absolut Introspection / Self Gravity Awareness"
– a model for a monument to Buzz Aldrin, including a "cup-and-ball" moon and rocket, as well as a portrait of Buzz inside a giant footprint.
– a landscape of rockets flying to the moon, entitled "You Are History"
– a "Buzz Aldrin with eclipse" landscape, entitled "The Visitor #2"

[...] Aurélien Gamboni semble aussi se préoccuper, avec plus ou moins d’affection, de l’histoire du second, de celui que l’on ne voit pas, que l’on n’a pas vu venir. Avec l’installation "Mon éducation (Tribute to Buzz)", il franchit une nouvelle étape dans sa pratique et mène son travail à un niveau de complexité et de recherche supérieur à ses œuvres précédentes. Le puzzle, inhérent à la narration même de "Mon éducation (The Usual Suspects)", est ici méticuleusement, mais aussi poétiquement, réalistement –voire crûment– révélé. Tout est sous nos yeux. Trente groupes de fusées géométriques, brûlées sur du papier thermo-réactif, laissent augurer du brillant destin de l’astronaute Buzz Adrin. Mais la chaîne, le tapis de production (une longue vitrine au CentrePasquArt de Bienne), semble alors s’affaisser un peu et la fabrique de héros ne produit, en définitive, que déception et déchéance pour celui qui restera, à jamais, le second. "Absolute introspection / Self gravity awareness" ou la frustration, la dépression et l’alcoolisme en quarante dessins abstraits –quoique volontiers suggestifs. Aurélien Gamboni laisse paraître la face cachée, il la transcende dans une esthétique aboutie.
